Professional Biography

Dr Pradeep Madhivathanan is a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia with dual specialist certification in both disciplines. He completed his medical training in India before moving to the UK in 2005, where he undertook specialist anaesthetic training through the Central London School of Anaesthesia, with clinical placements at University College London Hospitals and the Royal Free Hospital.

He holds multiple prestigious qualifications, including Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, and the European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine.

Dr Madhivathanan began his consultant career at St Bartholomew's Hospital in 2014, later joining King's College Hospital as a substantive Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care. During this time, he established the PACE (Perioperative and Critical Care Echo and Ultrasound) Academy, an educational and research initiative focused on echocardiography and point-of-care ultrasound. He joined Royal Papworth Hospital in 2017.

His clinical interests include extracorporeal support in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), perioperative and critical care echocardiography, and point-of-care ultrasound. He has a strong commitment to teaching and training, regularly lecturing nationally and internationally, and mentoring clinicians through accredited programmes in intensive care and echocardiography.

In recognition of his work in ARDS, he was awarded the NEXT Fellowship by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine in 2018.

Dr Madhivathanan also holds leadership and educational roles, including Chair of the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee at Papworth Hospital and examiner for both the FFICM and MRCP (UK) PACES examinations. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and edited a book on point-of-care ultrasound.

Outside of medicine, he plays cricket for the Cherry Hinton Cricket Club in Cambridge and is a musician, playing the acoustic guitar, harmonica, and piano.
